A Stray dog teams up with a retired lawyer to seek justice in court against a rich man who did injustice to it. Kooran stands out as an unconventional thriller built on a fascinating and original premise. In Kodaikanal, an unusual scene unfolds – a dog frequently visits the local police station as if trying to lodge a complaint. A blind artist astonishingly sketches perfect portraits of the people he converses with, while a lawyer, Dharmaraj (SA Chandrasekaran), has a large bell outside his home for citizens to ring when seeking justice – a concept reminiscent of the legendary King Manuneethi Cholan. The story kicks into gear when a puppy dies in a hit-and-run accident, prompting its grieving mother to approach Dharmaraj for help. Although the concept may sound odd on paper, director Nithin Vemupati skillfully brings it to life, portraying the growing bond between Dharmaraj and the mother dog as they set out to find the culprit. The plot cleverly raises questions – How can a dog give testimony in court? How can a blind man assist in solving the case? – and answers them with twists that often surprise and engage. For instance, the dog even seems to remember the exact date of the crime, which leads to intriguing explanations. These inventive answers keep viewers hooked, even if the pacing is often bogged down by a slow and sometimes overstretched narrative. In a courtroom drama like this, the thrill usually comes from watching lawyers uncover evidence and exploit loopholes. However, in Kooran, key clues sometimes appear too conveniently, as if handed to Dharmaraj without effort. One scene, for example, shows him exiting a church only to bump into a witness waiting outside, who claims it’s an “act of God.” While the makers might chalk it up to cinematic license, such moments dilute the suspense. Similarly, some action scenes strain credibility – Dharmaraj, despite his age, sprints uphill in Kodaikanal chasing a car without breaking a sweat, evoking memories of Indian 2 where' elderly characters perform superhuman feats. The performances are strong across the board, with SA Chandrasekaran, YG Mahendran, Balaji Sakthivel, and George Mariyan lending weight to the drama. Yet, the true star of Kooran is the mother dog herself. Her presence drives the narrative, and the music effectively captures her emotions, making certain scenes genuinely moving. This emotional resonance, coupled with a fresh storyline, intriguing twists, and a strong moral core, ensures Kooran remains a distinctive thriller – even if its storytelling stumbles along the way.
